Computing

Intent – Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in a particular manner?

Computing is an essential and innovative subject that helps children to access an ever-changing digital world. Our goal is for all children at Castle Primary School to become digitally literate learners. This means we would like children to be able to access and use computers, programs and applications in a wide variety of instances. Alongside this, we would like children to use and develop a wide range of computing skills to both express their creativity and solve a range of problems confidently with technology.

We aim for all children to:

  • be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
  • have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve a variety of problems.
  • use and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
  • start to understand fundamental principles and concepts of computer science.

Implementation – What do we teach? What does this look like?

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children to thrive and learn, by putting all pupils at the forefront of everything we do, regardless of their background or ability. This allows all children to flourish and become the very best version of themselves.

To encourage whole-school consistency and progression, the school has invested into a brand-new computing scheme, Kapow Computing, which has a wide ranging and challenging computing curriculum, that will both be exciting and stretch our learners. The programs and software used is often free and learning can continue at home. Kapow Computing covers all of the National Curriculum objectives and aims, ensuring our children are best equipped to access their continued education and the digital world after they leave Castle. If you would like any more information, please follow this link.

Alongside a broad and balanced computing curriculum from Kapow Computing, we are integrating our computing and technology across the foundation and wider curriculum. At Castle, we strongly believe that Computing can enhance our children’s learning experience, ensuring that new knowledge and experiences make a powerful and lasting impact on their learning journey. We will be achieving this by integrating technology into their enquiry projects, English and Maths. We recognise that technology plays a large role in today’s modern world and wherever possible, expand and develop our children’s ability to use technology in a variety of different subjects and environments.

Impact – By the time children leave our school…

We would have encouraged our children to enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. We will constantly ask the WHY behind their learning and not just the HOW. We want learners to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well-being.

The way pupils’ showcase, share, celebrate and publish their work will best show the impact of our curriculum. We also look for evidence through reviewing pupil’s knowledge and skills digitally through a variety of applications such as Seesaw for example. Progress of our computing curriculum is demonstrated through our computing and enquiry projects over the school year.
