PE and Sport
At Castle Primary School we aim to improve the health and well-being of all our pupils and raise sporting achievement. We believe that sport and exercise play a vital role in not only keeping our children healthy, but also in the promotion of mental well-being, self-esteem and both individual and team skills.
All pupils take part in P.E. throughout the school and our Head of Sport is responsible for overseeing the provision of high-quality teaching and learning. Our PE curriculum is planned and sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before. At Castle Primary, we aim to have 2 lessons of high quality PE a week. As a school, we follow the REAL PE scheme, an inclusive lesson plan which focuses on developing children’s agility, balance, co-ordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning. It also allows teachers to teach a high quality PE lesson, which includes all children to succeed within the lesson. KS1 complete a REAL PE lesson along with either, gymnastics, dance, forest school or athletics. KS2 complete a REAL PE lesson along with an invasion games lesson (with focus on a particular sport), athletics or OAA. Year 5 and 6 also have 10 hours of swimming which will provide them with a range of strokes and increase water confidence. It is hoped that most children can swim 25m by the time they leave us.
As a school we are really pleased that for the third year running we have the Silver Award for School Games Mark and we are keen to go for Gold. To achieve this we have been offering a leadership award for our Year 5 and 6 children which allows children to lead, support and officiate different activities.
Extra-Curricular Sport
At Castle we are proud that we offer many different extra-curricular activities, free of charge, to all children at Castle Primary School. We cater for a wide range of sporting interests such as Dance, Netball, Football, Girls Football, Tag Rugby, Athletics, Gymnastics, Cheerleading and more. Our children are given every opportunity to represent their school which highlights our desire to show Castle Primary as a place where enthusiasm and skill are equally rewarded.
